The lost in 1957 of his best friend Peter Collins on the Nurburgring was a terrible blow. Mike ended the 1958 season, but the fun was out for him. A few weeks after his retirement, Mike died in his Jaguar on the Guildford Bypass in January 1959...

I read somewhere that Peter Collins had a certain animosity against Tony Brooks because Tony was offered a seat in the Aston team thanks to Peter. Tony did so well in such a short time, without the years of practice that Peter had, that this created a rivalry towards Brooks. Maybe this could be the reason why Peter overcooked it at the Nurburgring racing against Tony Brooks...

I think it is more likely that these two, so different out of the cockpit, were simply racers to their fingertips. Moss had been in the lead but retired so there were three cars dicing for the lead on the most formidable circuit in the world. Collins was very unlucky in that he went slightly wide at a right hander. Unfortunately the car clipped the grass verge and overturned - throwing him out. It was a fearful price to pay for a small mistake.
