All it needs now is a small petrol engine to charge the batteries as you are driving it...

That would weight it down and make it far less efficient, essentially shortening the driving range. They discuss ideas like this on their web site and blog. An option with the car is a portable charging station to carry in the trunk for long trips. Since it only takes a couple hours for a full charge, any long trip would just need a little rest stop along the way. (Which frankly anyone driving more than 250 miles should do anyway!)

Perhaps an alternator driven by any rotating part could put back some charge into the batteries

The title "Lotus Tesla" is misleading. Lotus are manufacturing the cars at their factory, but it's all under contract to Tesla Motors. Future models will be manufactured in the USA by Tesla themselves. The proper name of the car should be "Tesla Roadster". Still it's a good introductory video. :)
