Stuart Sutcliffe 1940-1962 Length: 1:49
Description: Stuart passed away forty six years ago, a few months shy of his twenty-second birthday. He has always been an enigmatic figure in the Beatles' story.
Philip Norman's excellent book, "Shout," first got me imagining what it would have been like to be an art student in Liverpool, like Stu and John, in 1959. I wanted to know more, so I went to Liverpool twenty-one years ago and talked to quite a few people that had known Stuart. The whole story has yet to be told. Thanks again to the folks in Liverpool and London that took the time to answer my endless questions: Bill Harry, Ray McFall, Alan Williams, Bob Wooler, Rod Murray, Helen Anderson, Alan Swerdlow, Nicholas Horsfield, Pete Best, Fred Marsden jr, Faron Ruffley, Norman Chapman, and John Byrne. Not forgetting, Horst Fascher, Mike Evans, and Brenda H. This is a link to my favorite pictures of Stuart on stage, taken by Peter Bruchmann around May 1961 at the Top Ten club: http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1961/61.03.27%2007.02%20top%20ten/07%20Peter%20Br%FCchmann/br%FCchmann02.html Here is a link to Wikipedia if you would like to know more about Stuart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Sutcliffe Thank you for watching. I think I like Stuart, like you said.. It is hard to piece together what kind of a person he really was, because everyone has a different perspective. Thanks. • miss9starr7 on 13-Oct-08 great acknowledgement. ive been trying to figure some stuff out, about stu, but its like... well i don't know. the beatles anthology says barely anything about him and he's so important. it just talks about how he got into a fight with paul and it wasn't good, and then it says a little about how he died, but he seems like such a great person. • konacoffee11 on 01-Oct-08 Brian sounds like such a sweety. Wherever he is I hope he realizes what he did for the world !!! • Andromeda1741 on 11-Sep-08 I happened to stumble on this video trying to research Stuart. Thanks for your little tribute to acknowledge him. Yes, he died so young at 21 by brain hemorrhage in the arms of his fiance Astrid Kirchner in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. His teacher said he was a very promising art student. His sister kept his art works. • yerblues1968 on 30-May-08 who are you? did you know stuart? thanks for this anyway. • nasratfatty on 21-May-08 Who am I? Good question. I am a 55 year old photographer and writer. I've worked as an English teacher in Thailand and Japan for the past 13 years. When I was 11, I met Brian Epstein and one of his "other" bands. They took me around in their limo and bought me dinner. I got to see them perform at the Ed Sullivan Studio, live and a dress rehearsal. When I was 32, I went to Liverpool to research a possible a book about Stuart. • ligger2 on 22-May-08 fascinating, and a sweet tribute. Say, who was the "other" band, anyway? • giles422 on 24-May-08 Brian Epstein's other band that befriended me was Gerry and the Pacemakers. Their drummer, Fred, was especially kind. He spoke about his fiancee (who had just gifted him with a new drum set), and also let me play around with his pro style 35 mm camera. I had never really met anyone from Liverpool before. I was so amazed by his friendliness and generousity. Mr. Epstein was also very polite and super well-dressed. I think they had the #1 song that month, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." • ligger2 on 21-Jun-08 I like him! Thank you • PaulineBeat on 14-May-08 Stu Is god. • 1950Naomi on 16-Apr-08 |
